mark berryhas come up with his own rewrite of o little town of bethlehem with accompanying pics here. great stuff....

bethlehemthis image was on the christmas mailout from amos trust. i thought it was a stunning picture. there is also a rewrite of 'o little town of bethlehem' inside which is brilliant. there is another one in the 'born among us' pack i mentioned as worship trick 26. these carol rewrites are worthy of being a worship trick in their own right so that makes them no 27! i have taken the liberty of putting them up here.

have been meaning to mention this site for a while (sorry i haven't posted for a while but have found a spare hour to catch up a little..... hence the plethora of posts). growproject is a youth congreagtion meets emerging church meets alt worship kind of thing - anyway good whatever it is. mark berry is the person i know there helping make it happen. there is also a blog which looks like it will be really good. i have added it to my blog roll

picture of up serviceon nov 19 i posted about a new alt worship service/group/thing/community called Up. some photos of their first service are here. looks fab - i've said it before and i guess i'll say it again but always encouraged to see/hear of new things starting.

worship trick 26
one of the best sources of images for liturgy/worship is a series i've had for a few years now called imaging the word. there are three volumes that follow the lectionary with prayers, reflections and images from art/photography round the world. they are big books and quite expensive but they are one of the best resources i have seen. i realised i had never added them to the worship tricks list when i got an e-mail from stevedownunder saying they had put some images from that on the graceway web site. you can order imaging the word by doing a search on amazon - but all three volumes are worth getting.

born among us picworship trick 25
born among us is a wonderful resource produced jointly by uspg and the methodist church. it's a follow up to the christ we share which has the images of christ from different cultures round the world (see worship trick 24). this one has 16 images of the nativity and advent from countries round the world. they are brilliant images but there is more.... there is a sheet for each part of the world containing info on the images and suggestions for using them. there are also worship resources including prayers from round the world. one i particularly liked was a rewrite of the carol 'o little town of bethlehem' written after someone had been to bethlehem and experienced the suffering there. this is a must. from a personal point of view i was disappointed that CMS who were a partner in the christ we share aren't one of the producers here - we missed a trick there!... you can order it from uspg's web site. if you haven't planned ideas for christmas/advent yet then this could be a great addition.

i haven't got a copy yet but it seems a hot new book is everyday apocalypse by david dark (great name eh?!) which engages in theological exploration through the likes of radiohead and the simpsons.... david dark spoke at last year's greenbelt and by all accounts was good..... in a few weeks no doubt i'll be posting to let you know what the book's really like. it's hard to find books that engage in serious (or fun even?) theological reflection via popular culture. anyone know any more?....

current issue of seven magazine is all about alternative worship with articles penned by the authority (as quoted by daniel millar) on the subject steve collins, daniel, and others.... i was pleased to see an article there by maggi dawn who i think is a wonderful writer - like to see you publish more maggi if you ever read this????

a bit about me... small drawing of jonny i am a londoner; christian; dad; postmodern (whatever that means - i know at least that i'm not modern); director of an independent record label proost which we set up to release music without being subject to christian record labels who had a frankly unimaginitive approach to music at the time as far as we were concerned; a member of grace , an alternative worship community in west london that has been an inspiration, lifeline, home, great bunch of friends, provided an arena in which to be creative about faith and worship and culture; i'm also part of the wider alternative worship movement/scene in the uk where i have lots of friends sharing the same dreams and struggles; an ideas person; a husband; national youth co-ordinator for cms; involved in various creative projects, the most successful of which has been the labyrinth which has been on a roll since we first installed it in st pauls cathedral in 2000; a mac user; co-ordinator of the worship at greenbelt arts festival where we have tried to create a space for new/creative/alternative worship especially in the new forms venues - a good place to visit if you want to encounter lots of creative uk worship in one go; writer (albeit a novice) with a few articles in books, mags and the web; a chelsea football supporter; involved in youth ministry - i have been for 15 years now - in the uk at least many people involved in alt worship want to avoid being labelled youth ministry as it's a convenient way for the church to write off what you do and the people involved aren't by any means youth (though some are), but i live in both arenas and think there's lots of overlap and creative conversation and ideas to be shared between the two; songwriter; lover of music especially the ambient, chilled, dub, instrumental end of things; lover of good food, belgian beer and conversation;
